Staffing woes drive June Job numbers higher

Just how difficult it is for businesses looking for staff is clearly visible in the June job numbers. Job Openings in Queenstown are at another record in June according to data released by JobFix.com with 783 open positions being advertised during the month. 2018 was the previous highest June with 458 roles advertised but 2021 has eclipsed this by 70%. The roles advertised also grew 45% over May.  The difficulty in recruiting F&B staff is seen clearly in the numbers, with 14% more roles advertised year to date than last year [1139 vs 995] and no sign of a slowdown in early July.

Traditionally June has the lowest roles available [see below] before the number of roles starts to build back for the summer season. Unsurprisingly seasonality profiles have been disrupted this year following the closed borders and quieter shoulder seasons. With the steep increases in open roles and lack of the traditional available worker pool to fill the roles there is no quick fix for employers desperate for staff, however the Government’s announcement on Friday of an essential skills visas extension for some foreign workers will certainly help struggling local businesses.
