Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki is located 30km north of Haast and 90km south of Fox Glacier on the West Coast (Highway 6). The lodge sits beside the Moeraki River and is surrounded by Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area. It is a short walk from the Tasman Seacoast.
The Lodge has 28 guest rooms. It can host 50+ guests but for most of the season occupancy is lower than this. Guests are mainly from the USA, UK, Australia and Western Europe. We host regular cycle groups including Backroads and VBT as well as independent travellers who normally travel by rental car. Our tariff is inclusive of accommodation, breakfast, dinner and two shorter guided activities each day.
The guided activities programme centres on the rainforest, the river and lake and the seacoast. We guide kayak safaris, rainforest ecology walks and hikes along the seacoast. There is excellent wildlife viewing, notably tawaki penguins, fur seals and forest birds.
We generate our own electricity with a turbine on the Moeraki River. Most supplies are delivered by freight trucks from Central Otago.
